Windward Parkway at rush hour, the A/C fighting a 94-degree afternoon, and your Audi temperature readout ticks a little higher than it used to. It's easy to ignore. On a summer commute around Milton and Alpharetta, that small change is often the first hint the cooling system is aging out.

The 3.0T supercharged cars in the S4, S5, and Q7 hide their water pump and thermostat down in the engine valley. Same idea, harder to reach. Either way, the part rarely fails all at once — it warns you first, if you're paying attention.
Heat is the enemy of cooling-system plastic. Plastic loses. Crawling up GA-400 past Windward, or sitting through the lights near Avalon and Crabapple, your Audi makes heat and moves very little air. That's the load that finds a marginal thermostat module.
Older cars feel it first. AAA has found that vehicles ten years and older are twice as likely to be stranded roadside — and about four times more likely to need a tow than newer cars, and a tired cooling system is a big reason why. A 2013 A4 that ran fine in April can strand you in a July traffic jam.
Start with the temperature readout. If it climbs above its normal spot in traffic, or the gauge swings up and down, the thermostat may be sticking, and a sweet smell through the vents means coolant is escaping and burning off somewhere warm.
Then look down. A pink or violet film near the front of the engine, or a small puddle after the car sits, is coolant that has finally found its way out. Catch it at the smell stage, not the puddle stage.
A weeping thermostat module is a manageable job. Run the engine low and hot, though, and you invite the expensive failures. Aluminum heads warp. Head gaskets give out.
The gap is stark. A water pump and thermostat service runs in the hundreds; a cooked head runs in the thousands. A summer coolant check is the cheapest engine insurance you can buy.
