By mid-September the mornings on Birmingham Hwy are almost pleasant and the afternoon dash still reads 88. So the A/C in the school-run Q5 has been merely okay since July. Okay is a symptom. A car air conditioner is a sealed loop that does not consume refrigerant the way an engine consumes oil, so a system running low is a system leaking somewhere. We have been finding those leaks on Commerce Blvd since 2003.

Learn MoreRefrigerant does not get used up. It circulates through a closed loop, and if the charge is low this September when it was full last September, the difference did not evaporate — it went out a hole. A seal, an O-ring, a pinhole in the condenser face, a compressor shaft seal weeping oil.
Add refrigerant without finding that hole and you have rented cold air for a month. Why pay twice? Oil travels with the refrigerant, so every leak drains the lubricant the compressor lives on, and a compressor run dry sends metal downstream through the condenser and the lines. It costs you at the pump too — A/C use can cut a conventional car's fuel economy by more than 25% on short trips.

On most European cars the condenser sits first behind the grille, ahead of the radiator, low and wide. Great for airflow, terrible for survival. A pebble off a dump truck on GA-400, years of grit, pollen packed into the fins — up here they fail by puncture and corrosion, not electrically. Look for the oily stain at one corner of the core.
Compressors are the other pattern. The newer ones rarely seize. They quit. Mercedes and BMW have used electronically controlled variable-displacement compressors for years, and the control valve that sets displacement can fail on its own, leaving a compressor that spins perfectly and makes no cold at all. There is nothing to hear. Which is why "it still runs" proves nothing on a 2018 GLE.

This one confuses everybody. Air that blows cold at 60 mph and turns lukewarm the moment you stop is not short on refrigerant. It is short on airflow across the condenser. Highway speed rams air through the core for free. At a standstill the electric fan has to do that work, and when the fan, its module or its relay quits, high-side pressure climbs and the cold disappears in traffic.
Sit at the Crabapple crossroads at 3:15 on a school day and you will feel it happen. Watch the temperature gauge too — a fan that cannot cool the condenser is not cooling the radiator. Sprinter vans idling all day live on that fan.

One side cold and the other warm is not a charge problem. It is a door. Small plastic actuators behind the dash swing blend doors that mix heater-core air into each side. Strip the gear teeth and that side stops answering. You can often hear it — soft clicking behind the glovebox after startup.

Then there is the drain. The evaporator sheds water through a rubber tube. Oak debris plugs it, the water backs up into the case, and the mildew people blame on the vents is growing in a wet passenger footwell. On these cars the climate control is its own module with its own fault memory — asked properly, it names the actuator that failed. That takes factory-grade tools, the same as the dealerships use.

September is the right time for this, and that is scheduling, not salesmanship. Every shop in north Fulton has the same May: the first 90-degree week lands and the phone does not stop. Bring it in now, while there is still enough afternoon heat to load the system and test it honestly.
There is a second reason. Leaks do not hold still over the winter. Your compressor still runs every time you hit the defroster — that is how a windshield gets dried — so six months of a low system is six months of a compressor short on oil. A small leak in September becomes a compressor in April.
→ preventative maintenance that catches this early
Because it is leaking. A sealed system does not use refrigerant up, so a car needing a charge every year has a hole that grows every year.
That points at the condenser cooling fan, not the refrigerant. Moving air does the fan's job at highway speed, so the fault only shows up at idle.
A blend door actuator has stripped its gears on the warm side. It is a small motor behind the dash, and the climate module usually logs which one failed.
A plugged evaporator drain. The water it normally sheds backs up into the housing, wets the carpet, and grows the smell coming through the vents.
Now. Georgia afternoons stay warm into October, so the system can still be tested under real load, and shop schedules here are tighter in May than in September.
